The Smoky Mountain Rally is now behind us, and as I look back on the week, I am reminded that the best motorcycle trips are about so much more than the miles traveled. They are about the people, the places, the unexpected moments, and the memories made along the way.
Our adventure began with the journey east, crossing Texas and making our way through Mississippi, Alabama, a small corner of Georgia, and finally into Tennessee. Along the way, we stopped in Tupelo to visit Elvis Presley’s birthplace and museum and enjoyed exploring a bit of music history before continuing our ride to Maryville, the home base for the rally.
Once registered and settled in, the real fun began. We spent our days exploring some of the most famous motorcycle roads in the country. The Devil’s Triangle challenged us with its twists, turns, switchbacks, and elevation changes. We visited the historic Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary, once home to some of the nation’s most notorious criminals, and later made stops at Bootlegger Harley-Davidson and other local attractions.
One of the highlights of the week was riding the Tail of the Dragon. Eleven miles and 318 curves make for an unforgettable experience. While many of the riders agreed it was easier than the Devil’s Triangle, it was still a thrilling ride and one that every motorcyclist should experience at least once. We also stopped at Fontana Dam for a photo challenge and enjoyed lunch in Tellico Plains before returning to the rally festivities.
Another day took us through the breathtaking scenery of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Cool temperatures, sunshine, and spectacular mountain views accompanied us as we rode through Gatlinburg, visited Hillbilly Harley-Davidson, and made our way to Bigfoot Harley-Davidson. After a family-style lunch at Paula Deen’s Restaurant in Pigeon Forge, we encountered one of those memorable rally moments when a motorcycle refused to start. As always, the group came together, and before long the problem was solved and everyone was back on the road.
The rally itself provided plenty of opportunities to connect with fellow riders. From the street party to shared meals and evening conversations, the friendships and fellowship were every bit as important as the riding. There were cool mornings, warm afternoons, a few unexpected rain showers, and countless opportunities to laugh together.
By the time we headed home, our odometers showed hundreds of additional miles, but the memories stretched much farther than that. We experienced some of the most beautiful roads in America, visited unique attractions, enjoyed great food, and shared an adventure with wonderful friends.
As with every rally, the destination was only part of the journey. The real reward was the time spent together, the stories we collected, and the reminder that life is best enjoyed one mile at a time.
Until the next rally, ride safe and keep making memories. 🏍️⛰️❤️
