What a great trip we had in June. Fifteen days, 4001 miles, 9 states, 9 hotels, 2 Great Lakes, crossing the Mississippi multiple times, checking into 18 H-D Dealerships and the H-D museum and enjoying the local flavor at every stop. In Iowa, we had some tasty food at The Machine Shed in Urbandale. I highly recommend you visit if you are ever in the area. We followed the Mississippi River from Dubuque to Winona, Wisconsin. It was amazing to see cliffs on either side of the river, where at the lower end of the Mississippi it is flat. Eagles are prevalent every where and you can get a glimpse of the soaring over the water waiting to dive and bring in the catch of the day. Another place to visit is the National Eagle Center. You get up close and personal with the eagles. The oil light came on on our way to Minneapolis and we stopped at Twin Cities H-D and they had us fixed up and on our way in just a few hours. I can’t say enough about the excellent service we received from them. We rode up through Duluth and then along the North Shore of Lake Superior to Split Rock Lighthouse. It was a gray and foggy day, but amazing to drive along the coast and look out on the water. It felt more like riding along side the ocean. We took a 3 hour boat ride around the Apostle Islands. Amazing how the forces of nature create such beauty as the ice caves. We drove to Door County on the peninsula of Wisconsin. The scenery was amazing the there was a short section of twisty roads before you get the the Northport Car Ferry. We drove along Lake Michigan towards Milwaukee. The visit to the H-D museum was my 2nd one but Tracy’s first. Amazing history of 120 years of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle display. We ate at Brisco County Wood Grill. I don’t recommend the chips and salsa. Who really puts corn in their salsa…. Tracy said the Princess chicken was very good. We traveled to Hannibal, MO where Mark Twain was born. On to Harrison, AR where we road the Pig Trail. Again, a first for Tracy. Tracy saw deer playing in a field along the way. We got stuck in a traffic back up near Atoka, OK and it was HOT. If you are out in the heat, don’t forget your water and take breaks. It was a great trip and one we will not soon forget.
